Beyond Brick and Mortar: The Spiritual Side of Nigerian Real Estate

Buying or renting a house is a major life decision. In Nigeria, it’s more than just checking legal documents. While confirming land titles and verifying ownership are crucial, neglecting the spiritual aspect can lead to unforeseen and devastating consequences.

Recently, Nollywood actor Williams Uchemba shared a chilling experience of living in a house in Abuja. He recounted how everyone who resided there suffered financial setbacks, with their fortunes reversing only upon leaving. This story, which you can find here: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/15sZGxpWeF/, might seem unbelievable to some, but it reflects a reality many have experienced in the Nigerian real estate landscape.

As someone with years of experience in real estate, I’ve witnessed similar occurrences that defy logical explanation. Let me share a couple of true stories.

The Magodo Mystery: A Bungalow of Financial Ruin

In 2015, I came across a beautiful three-bedroom bungalow in Magodo, Lagos. It was nestled in a self-compound and offered at a surprisingly low rent of ₦800,000 per year. At the time, comparable properties in the area were fetching ₦1.5 million. The price was too good to be true, and it turned out, it was.

Upon inquiring, I discovered a disturbing pattern. Every tenant who had occupied the house faced severe financial hardship. The last tenant, who moved in with a car and a thriving business, lost everything within months, leaving the property barefoot and destitute. The message was clear: “If you care about your clients, don’t recommend this house.” I heeded the warning and walked away.

The Ago Palace Duplex: A Cursed Blessing

More recently, a client was thrilled to find a fully furnished duplex for sale in Ago Palace Way. It boasted a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) and was priced at a mere ₦20 million. The owner claimed he was relocating and wanted to “bless someone” with the property.

Despite the seemingly perfect legal documents, my client decided to take his pastor for prayers before finalizing the purchase. The pastor’s revelation was shocking: “Do not buy this house if you want to live long.” He explained that the house was built on a foundation tainted by rituals, and the owner had abandoned it due to a spiritual curse.

This revelation shed light on the owner’s unusual behavior. He had left behind personal belongings, claiming his family had moved abroad. The truth was, he had fled the cursed property. When confronted, he couldn’t provide a coherent explanation, confirming the pastor’s words. The deal was promptly canceled.

The Lesson: Pray Before You Pay

These stories are just a glimpse into the spiritual dimension of Nigerian real estate. A house may appear perfect on paper, but hidden spiritual issues can wreak havoc on your life.

Here are some crucial takeaways:

  • If a deal seems too good to be true, investigate further.
  • Trust your gut feeling. If you sense unease, don’t ignore it.
  • Conduct both legal and spiritual due diligence.
  • Pray before you rent or buy.
