Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, reiterated the commitment of the federal government, under the auspices of the Ministry, to ensure the delivery of high-quality and affordable housing to all segments of the Nigerian populace.
During a meeting with representatives of the Renewed Hope Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, held at his office, Dangiwa emphasized the importance of affordable housing as a basic human right, echoing sentiments expressed by President Tinubu during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates at Karsana, Abuja, on February 8, 2024.
He affirmed the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the Cooperative Society to facilitate the provision of affordable housing solutions for its members, praising the proactive efforts of the cooperative’s leadership in enabling their members to achieve homeownership.
Under the framework of the Renewed Hope Agenda spearheaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Dangiwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring access to quality housing for all Nigerians. He underscored the Ministry’s willingness to support and collaborate with organized groups like the Renewed Hope Cooperative Society to empower their members to own homes.
Dangiwa outlined the ambitious plans of the government, including the construction of 50,000 housing units nationwide in the first phase of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Project. He encouraged members to position themselves to benefit from these initiatives, citing the inauguration of 3,112 housing units by President Tinubu in Karsana, Abuja, as part of the project.
Highlighting ongoing efforts, Dangiwa revealed that contracts had been awarded for the construction of Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in 12 states across the country. He emphasized the affordability and adaptability of the housing units, which are designed to accommodate future expansions according to residents’ needs.
In addition to the Renewed Hope Estates and Cities, the Minister proposed that the Cooperative Society consider subscribing to the National Housing Programme, which has already delivered housing units in more than 20 states. He detailed various flexible purchase options available for prospective homeowners, including outright purchase, mortgage, rent-to-own, and installmental payment plans.
To support the Cooperative Society’s homeownership aspirations, Dangiwa recommended exploring Cooperative Housing Development Loans offered by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. He explained the process, wherein cooperatives could secure funding for housing construction and subsequently facilitate affordable mortgage options for their members.
Dangiwa clarified misconceptions surrounding the National Housing Fund (NHF), emphasizing its accessibility to all Nigerians, regardless of employment sector. He also unveiled plans for the establishment of a National Social Housing Fund, aimed at providing free housing in all 774 Local Government Areas for citizens in need.
In his remarks, Taofeek Afolabi, the National Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Multipurpose Cooperative Society, expressed confidence in the partnership with the Ministry, highlighting the cooperative’s dedication to facilitating homeownership opportunities for its members through mortgage arrangements.
Afolabi commended the Minister’s achievements and announced the Cooperative Society’s decision to appoint him as their Patron. He disclosed the Society’s growing membership and reiterated its commitment to making homeownership accessible and affordable for Nigerians from diverse backgrounds.
